Nikolay Shustov, a 40 year old merchant, started the company’s story in 1863 with a small liquor distillery on Maroseyka Street in Moscow. For about two years the factory staid at Maroseyka addresses producing a limited range of pure alcohol and wine. The company’s small capacities were paid for by the excellent product’s quality which was revered by loyal customers and earned a loyal following. Shustov products remarkable taste and distinctive trade dress helped in confidently establishing the company on the market. According to the Moscow government’s records of 1881, Shustov’s distillery firmly held 16th place on the alcohol market in Russia. An enterprise run by just 18 employees was producing 3,950 vodka buckets (the customary measure of volume in those days) annually, upstaging in desirability the worldly known Peter Smirnov’s offerings with an impressive capacity of 200 thousands vodka buckets a year.
The Imperial Government of Russia granted the Shustov family the right to use the emblem of a Tsar's Bell on their Vodka, the emblem of Imperial Russia. By 1900 Shustov was declared as the official Vodka of the Court and was produced in facility next to the Kremlin. Through the 1900's Shustov Vodka won numerous awards for Highest Quality Vodka at International exhibitions in Glasgow, London, Milan, Naples and Paris. This tradition of impeccable quality continues with Shustov now produced at Ost-Alko's state-of-the-art facility in Cherngolokva on the outskirts of Moscow!
Back in the beginning of the XX century “Shustov’s” cognac was widely known as one of the most frequently advertised Russian liqueurs; its advertising images constantly appeared in major magazines and newspapers, on top of tram roofs and even on the “Samoliot” shipping company’s price lists. In France, which is still considered to be cognac’s motherland, Shustov’s Bell-shaped logo was far better recognized by the Russian consumers than any of the home brands’ labels.
Modern history of the brand Shustov began in 2001, when “OST-Group” received exclusive rights from descendents of N.L. Shustov. All products under the brand Shustov are produced at “OST-Alco” factory in Chernogolovka.
